A bit of speculation on DAOs

There have been a couple of interesting DAOs recently.

DAO being decentralized autonomous organization, or something like that, it’s a web3 thing. The important part is that they are groups of people and they have group objectives to complete. Something about this is web3, like they’re made of smart contracts, or pay people in a custom token, but all I know is that they seem to actually organize via Discord 1.

One of these is SpiceDAO, which purchased the sourcebook for Jodorowsky’s Dune (movie worth watching) at 10x the asking price. Their intention was to then produce media using the Dune properties contained in the book 2.

The trouble with this is that that’s not how copyright works. You don’t own the rights to the IP just because you own a copy - even the original copy.

So: there was a DAO that operated under the idea that by buying an original copy of some IP, you would then have ownership over the IP.

There was also a DAO that attempted to buy one of eleven originals of the US Constitution.
